The stars light up the black night sky. The sea is dark. Have pushed the lungs to the breaking point. I’m fighting against a monster fish 17 meters under water without oxygen and the body is screaming for air. Light glimpse from the lamp shows green liquid flowing out several wounds on my hand. It is the colour of blood under water. Nobody told me that the fish defends itself with two sets of razor blades on the tail. The lungs feels empty, but must have enough air to swim to the surface. Reason tells me to drop the monster, but I refuse. An eternity later a proud gook breaks the surface and the fresh night air has never tasted better. The night’s result was a dozen bloody cuts, a man in the hospital to sew and 50 kg of fish ready for sale on the market the next morning. An adrenalin-filled night for me – a normal working day for spear fishermen in the Pacific. I am on the island of Tuvalu, the world’s three smallest nation with only 10,000 inhabitants, but of which several are hardcore spear fishermen. Tuvalu, May 1st, 2014

Spearfishing can be dangerous. One of the fishermen ended up at the hospital after being cut by the fish
